Fighting Hunger

As a food service provider, Sodexo believes it's our responsibility to be a leader in fighting to end hunger in America.

This is the mission of the Sodexo Foundation and our STOP Hunger campaign - www.helpstophunger.org. Since its founding in 1999, the Sodexo Foundation has made more than $9.2 million in grants and donated approximately $9 million in-kind to fight hunger.

Our Nation Cares about Hunger

In a 2006 voter poll:

  • 73 percent of voters approve of an expanded effort to reduce hunger
  • 65 percent say hunger and poverty issues are important for how they cast their votes
  • 80 percent say a presidential contender's stand on hunger and poverty issues is important

*McLaughlin and Associates, November 2006

The Sodexo Foundation is committed to accelerating the effort to end hunger in America as we know it. We believe we need to do more than simply feed people. We need to empower them with skills and knowledge so they can create a better life for themselves and their families.

Hunger and Homelessness Survey

Though the Hunger and Homelessness Survey, Sodexo partners with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to bring national attention to the factors that impact hunger and homelessness in metropolitan centers across the country.

The Cost of Hunger

The Sodexo Foundation recently sponsored a groundbreaking study to assess the economic costs of domestic hunger. Sodexo hopes this important study will bring new national attention to the true cost of hunger and jump start a debate about concrete steps we can take to make America hunger-free.

This report was promoted to Congress in a letter from Representatives McGovern and Emerson along with an analysis of the cost of hunger by state.

Innovative State Policies Fight Poverty

Working hard and being employed may no longer be enough to ward off poverty, according to a study released by the Sodexo Foundation and Brandeis University's Institute on Assets and Social Policy. The study finds that the U.S. has a large contingency of working poor who do not have sufficient resources to support their families at a minimum economic standard.

STOP Hunger Scholarship Awards

Sodexo's STOP Hunger Scholarship Awards recognizes more than 1,400 educational institutions who are active in the fight against hunger and poverty and who attend one of the more than 1,400 educational institutions we serve. In June, the Sodexo Foundation honored five students with its inaugural STOP Hunger Scholarship Awards, providing scholarships to the student winners and grants to the organizations they help.

You can view this year's student award winners here.

Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen, funded by the Sodexo Foundation, train unemployed adults in basic culinary skills and use rescued and donated surplus food to make balanced meals for people in need. The programs provide instruction in food safety, life skills and job training - and help participants find career-track jobs in the food service industry.

Sodexo supports 30 Community Kitchen Programs nationwide with grants and job placement for qualified candidates. We're proud of the program's 80 percent retention rate among graduates.
